14-16 PROVISION

YOUTHREACH PROJECT

The Springboard Youthreach project caters for the learning and development needs of young people who become disengaged from mainstream education in years 10 and 11. It is targeted, in particular, towards those young people who are unlikely to re-integrate back into school on a full- time basis. Since it was set up in 1997, Youthreach has supported over 800 young people and provided them with the opportunity to achieve qualifications and progress to further education, training or employment.

Project provision

Youthreach offers participants a comprehensive curriculum of learning, development and enrichment provision incorporating the following aspects:

  • GCSE in English and Mathematics
  • ICT
  • Literacy and Numeracy
  • Art
  • Carpentry and Joinery
  • Dance
  • Painting and Decorating
  • Drama
  • Child Care
  • Multi-Media
  • Advice and Guidance
  • Motivational Training
  • Healthy Living
  • Mentoring

The learning and development needs of participants are assessed when the join the project. An Individual Learning Plan, based on the outcome of their assessment, is then drawn up and agreed in respect of each participant.

The progress of participants is monitored on an ongoing basis and a formal review is carried out every term.

Qualifications

While on the project, participants have the opportunity to achieve a range of qualifications and awards including:

  • GCSE in English
  • OCR CLAIT
  • GCSE in Mathematics
  • City & Guilds START IT
  • City and Guilds Construction awards
  • Functional Skills English,
    maths and ICT
  • Junior Sports Leaders award
  • Food and Hygiene
  • First Aid
  • Health and Safety

Progression

Participants receive Advice and Guidance from an Islington Connexions Adviser who works with the project and are supported in applying for further education, training and employment opportunities.

Joining the Youthreach Project: Referrals to the project must be made by the schools or local authorities that are responsible for the pupils concerned. In making a referral schools and local education authorities must formally agree to meet the costs of the pupil’s participation on the project. Currently, the cost per pupil place on the programme is £4500 for Islington pupils and £4,800 for those who are from outside of the borough
